RESEARCH

From its origins, the Alliance for Surgery and Anesthesia has been committed to quality research on surgical and anesthesia care in LMICs.  Since 2008, more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts have been published by this accomplished group, encompassing such topics as surgical and anesthesia capacity, unmet surgical need, safety, quality, cost-effectiveness, outcomes, proposed surgical metrics, and surgical systems, accompanied by advocacy pieces supporting each.

Our members continue to expand ASAP’s vision to encompass all areas of expertise which impact surgical and anesthesia delivery, evaluation, sustainability, cost effectiveness and global policy.  ASAP members have been at the helm of some of the most influential efforts within Global Surgery and Anesthesia, including the Lancet Commission of Global Surgery (LCoGS); the surgical volume of the 3rd Edition of Disease Control Priorities (DCP3); the Global Alliance for Surgery, Obstetrics, Trauma and Anesthesia (G4 Alliance); and concerted efforts leading to the unanimous passage of World Health Assembly Resolution 68.15 on Strengthening Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anesthesia as a Component of Universal Health Coverage.

We remain committed to advancing this research agenda in an effort to advance the inclusion of surgical care into the global health agenda, and strive for meaningful contributions in the literature and at international surgical forums. We are honored to have the World Journal of Surgery publish the highlights of our annual ASAP and Biennial World Congress of Surgery meetings.
